Your pet’s safety is a primary concern. If your pet is loose, a quick stop could cause him or her to be injured when slammed against a seat or worse, completely ejected from the car in an accident. You could also get hurt in such a situation if the animal hits you. An unconfined cat could cause distractions for you. Your kitty could see a dog and panic while you are driving. Unrestrained animals can also make their way under your feet and cause braking or acceleration issues. Some like to ride in your lap, but a deploying airbag could be life-ending.

Secondly, comfort is important. Cats actually feel more secure with their own familiar, enclosed space, especially when they are in strange situations. Since they are more comfortable, they may even fall asleep. They will be less likely to see something out the window like a dog that would cause panic.

Messes are another issue. Some cats get very stressed when traveling. Vomiting, urinating and bowel movements can be the result. The mess is much easier to clean up if it is confined to the crate rather than ending up in your car’s carpet. You also may want to keep animal hair out of your car.

Transportation once you leave the car is also important. Going to the vet? Kitty might not be cooperative. Your kitty could escape from you and get lost.

Are you transporting multiple pets? Separate carriers for each one are best. Then, you won’t have to worry about fights while you are trying to drive. You also won’t have to worry about them hurting each other in case of an accident.

A cat carrier is a necessity for your pet’s well-being and comfort as well as reducing messes for you to clean up. The ride will be safer for the humans in the vehicle, too.
